In serendipituous fashion I came across an article written by Dick Cavett of New York. Mr. Cavett, it seems, had a well-regarded television career as "the host of “The Dick Cavett Show” — which aired on ABC from 1968 to 1975 and on public television from 1977 to 1982."
During his tenure as a TV host, he interviewed Bobby Fischer three times. As a result, he developed a certain perspective on Fischer which he reveals in this superbly written article.
I would strongly suggest that anyone even remotely interested in Bobby Fischer reads this article entitled, Was It Only aGame? and the follow-up article, Bobby and You.
A video of one of the interviews can be viewed on YouTube.
The first Bobby I ever knew, even though I am only 28, was this energetic, (mostly) likeable fellow, who inspired you to play chess. Then later came the radio interviews, and everyone started talking about how crazy fischer was.
It would be sad if the only thing people learn about Fischer when they grow up is that he was some kind of lunatic chess god...I hope everyone sees the Fischer that the world knew in these interviews.
