Søren Anton Sørensen

An acquaintance of mine, Martin Moller (martin moller at chessgames.com) has a website devoted to Danish chess for the period between 1830 and 1930.
Chess had been played in a many countries as early as 1830. Some lovers of chess have gone to great lengths to document those historic chess activities in some countries, but there are just as many or more countries whose chess past has either been forgotten or not very well accounted for. Denmark, it seems to me, is one of those countries in sore need of some explorations into their national chess history. Mr. Moller's wonderful site, while just in its infancy, provides a lot of very interesting information of the hisory of Danish chess.  Hindered somewhat by the restrictions of the web host,  Mr. Moller assures me he hopes to put up more games and a section on Danish women's chess.

One player I became familiar with through Martin's site is Søren Anton Sørensen, who, born on January 31, 1840, (dying on February 11, 1896) was a contemporary of Morphy. Sørensen, who was a lieutenant colonel in the Danish army, also edited the Nordisk Skaktidende between 1870 and 1880.
Besides being an inventive and creative player, Sørensen was a capable problemist and along with A. Arnell, published "Nordiske Skakproblemer 1858-78" (generously available in pdf format from Anders Thulin's site).

 According to Martin, Sørensen won a problem tournament in London in 1874 with the following problem which proved so difficult it even stumped the judges.
