Siegbert Tarrasch used this particular trap in the Ruy Lopez on two different strong opponents, Johannes Zukertort and Isidor Gunsberg.

Before this tournament in Manchester, Tarrasch had only played in one other important contest in Hamburg two years prior. In this tournament he score first out of twenty (strong) opponents with a +12 score. The second place winner, Isidor Gunsburg, only scored a +4.
