There are several good reasons why studying traps might be considered important. First, of course, to avoid becoming a victim of one. Second is to recognize the opportunity of gaining a quick victory. But the third reason is the best one, I believe: since traps, by their very nature, are not at all obvious and take advantage of poor play (particularly, though not exclusively, in the openings), understanding how traps work reveal to us certain secret tactical truths in postions that we may never have learned on our own.
The last reason is as obvious as the first: they are fun!
For this posting I've selected traps in the KING'S GAMBIT, taken from actual historic games.
.
hmmm...that's right. Even with the knight's checking ability, it doesn't speed up any checkmate...better to get rid of her, first.
I see, said the blind man, as he grabbed his hammer and saw.
bugoobiga, if 18. Bf6, would 18. . . Qh6 hold?
On C35, Dragoljub Baretic vs. Uremovic, couldn't white have gone 18. Bf6?
GREAT trap.
Diagram of the KGD variation on the s.p.t.[*] theme I just posted:
[*] 'stupid patzer's-trap'
a trap in the King's Gambit declined: same thing as 'that stupid patzer's trap'[1], but black has to be just a tad more careful in freeing his Q:
[Event "KGA-trap"][Site "no. 1"][Date "????.??.??"][Round "?"][White "NN"][Black "NN"][Result "0-1"]1.e4 e5 2.f4 Bc5 3.fxe5?? Qh4+ 4.g3 Qxe4+ 5.Qe2 Qxh1! {safe!} 6.Nf3 Nc6 7.Nc3 Nd4! {and the black Q is free.} 0-1
[1] I must clarify that I meant 'stupid' to apply to the 'trap', not the trappee (nor the trapper).
NJY's Danish Trap, as well as Ian_Sinclair's Stupid Patzer Trap are quite similar to this well known KGA trap: 1. e4 e5 2. f4 f6 3. fxe5 fxe5 4. Qh5+ g6 5. Qxe5+ Qe7 6. Qxh8 Qxe4+ 7. Kd1.
Thanks, y'all.
Ian Sinclair's first trap is called 'that stupid patzer trap' - at least I called it that on fics in 2006 when opp fell into that and disconnected, and I called - SCREAMED - for immediate-adjudication..
the game was adjudicted in my favour in 5 minutes - so maybe the name 'that stupid patzer trap' works! :)
This traps occurs in many openings: mine was with white with the danish [excellent against patzers]:
1.e4 e5 2. d4 f6?! 3. de fe?? {it is amazing how many patzers fall for it - I must have about 100 danish games courtsey this 'defence'}
4.Qh5+ {a smarter points-hoarding patzer should have disconnected here - since on fics unless black's 6th move is made disconnection means the game counts as 'not having occurred at all' }4...g6 5.Qxe5+ Qe7 6.Qxh8 Qxe4+7.Be3 {not best - but who cares! - anyway, opp. NOW sees the light and disconnects: I ask adjudication, they give standard bureaucratic nonsense [no demonstrable checkmate, so - apply for adjudication after 1 week at least; adjucation may take up to 4 months..] I scream about adjudication policies of fics, add ___ism and ___ charges [*] - and lo and behold: in 5 minutes I get "since this seems to be a special case, it is adjudicated a win for normajeanwhy[**] " [1]
[*] which happen to be true; so I left it for the fics-experienced reader to fill in in line with chess.com policies -- the blanks mean i could be saying 'humanism' and 'stoicism' [or not ;] so I am not necessarily criticising fics ...
[**]my handle at fics
[1] Since 2007, on fics, if opp disconnects I resign. If I get disconnected then I resign the next time I log in. Even if I have mate in 1.
Or this one for black.
I like the LAST one the BEST.
