Morphy's Tour

Submitted by benws on Wed, 06/11/2008 at 4:38pm.

The American chess legend Paul Charles Morphy (1837-1884) was one of the most famous chess players of the 19th century and possibly the best of his time. After becoming U.S. champion in 1857, the following year he set off on a famous tour of Europe that made him undoubtedly the world #1. This included the smashing of the great Anderssen in a match (+7-2=2).

This is a famous Morphy game! The next game won Anderssen in 77 moves and he thereupon remarked that: "Morphy wins in 17, I win in 77." Anderssen played also Sicilian but as White. 1.a3 e5 2.c4 Nf6 3.Nc3 d5 is the Sicilian only with inverse color. Remain at this game: right is the comment in the 14th move that white can maintain an advantageous endgame. But how? If 14... Qxd5 than 15.Nfd5 Nxf3+ 16.gxf3 exf2+ 17.Kxf2 Bc5+ 18.Ke2 Rb8. White has a pawn advantage. The advantage of Bishop-pair is theoretical. No doubt that Morpy was the best in his time, and perhaps in every time. (We were of the same opinion with GM Bilek when I published a Morphy-book in 1995, in Hungarian of course)

First is the games of Morphy, my English is of minor importance.
