Hi

I'm new to the site and a recreational chess player. I was surprised upon reading some of the blogs at how many players on here attempt to memorize positions. There are so many combinations that I personally find it impossible. Anyway I am just a casual chess player and I do alright among casual players without memorizing moves.

You are definitely right kingman, it is impossible to memorize every possiblilty. That however, does not stop new players from trying. I think more advanced players play positional chess and utilize forks and other tactics in order to gain an advantage.

There are infinite possibilities, so I don't think it is possible to memorize every move.  I think the key is to be able to see possibilities in the future.  I have noticed that some of the better players  seem to have a defense for each move, and can attack  giving you a choice between two pieces.

Indeed. It is far too boring to memorize and play like a parrot. I enjoy the attack... even it means losing. I am not playing for a living, but  for fun.

I agree I find it better to look at the board and see what develops and is presented.

Here in the city you can find games in the park during the warm months, but a lot of those guys are serious players. I personally find it hard to learn when I am that badly overmatched. This i sthe best site I have found for finding players I match up well with and they have great articles that help me improve my game. I wouldn't say I "wing it" I try to play positional chess and let the game come to me.
