Sicilian Defence as Black #1 - The Strength of the B-Pawn

Submitted by bronzefeet on Sat, 06/20/2009 at 7:26pm.

The Sicilian Defense is my favorite opening against 1. e4 and I am always looking for ways to improve it.  This series on the Sicilian Defense is not expert commentary, rather it is meant as one chess player's journey of discovery as I try to learn more about this opening.  If you find errors in my analysis please tell me!  I am here to learn like the rest of us and welcome any and all responses from you.

First of all, this Sicilian started out traditionally and I found I had my e6, d6, and a6 pawns out, something I think is pretty common.  Then, I found by pushing by b-pawn I gained the opening advantage.

yeah..sicillian is my fave for black... though dragon variation is my all time fave...its too old but thats the beauty of it, a classical opening still being played in tournaments...

kasparov also popularized the sicillian on his games...

Instead of 4...d6, better might be 4...g6, which is the Accelerated Dragon. This move saves a tempo.
