Bowler hat and blood of a snail – the most beautiful game in Dresden

The first Hungarian who played chess was Beatrix Queen the wife of Mathew Corvinus King (Mathias Rex). The Queen played chess with the Czech King in July, 1479. On the first picture there is the bust of Beatrix from the Louvre. She wore crown on her head.

Since 1918 here in Hungary isn’t kingdom. But we have a Queen, a Chess-Queen. She is Judit Polgar who is the best female chessplayer in the World 20 years ago. She is on the second picture wearing a hat. You will see that she has the blood of a snail when she goes into a combination. In the Hungarian it means: don’t get excited!

Which one was the most beautiful game in Dresden in the Olympiad? I don’t know but this masterpiece is between the most beautiful games. This game was published in a Hungarian magazine the „Magyar Nemzet” (Hungarian Nation) by Istvan Bilek GM. I toke over three comment from him with his consent.

Because the analyzing is long, i give it here, the game doesn’t consists analyzing.

After 5.Bd3: In a Botvinnik – Lilienthal game (Soviet Championship, 1941) 5.Nge2 happened that after Bxc3 he could take the bishop with this knight. But Lilienthal played 5… d5 6.a3 Be7. Now Botvinnik after 7.cxd5 exd5 8.g3 his bishop placed to g2, but the game lost. In a Lilienthal – Larsen game (Moscow, 1962) Lilienthal moved 8.Ng3 instead of 8.g3, and won the game in the 26th move. In the Euwe – Alekhine game (world championship, 1937) was the same continuation. Alekhine continued with 8… c5, and 9.dxc5 Bxc5 10.b4? (Bd3) d4! happened and Alekhine won the 25th (last) mach game.

After 21… Nd3: The success of strategy depends from career of bishop or knight: as almost always in this opening. Most of people began to fear the knight, which entered to the „belly” of adversary: what will happen if must it to lead back. For this reason had to trust in the knight, that this dominant advanced guard will bring the victory. There is the question of life or death in fate of the Stinitz knight. (I. Bilek)

After 29… e4!: Must take the shock-pawn, because moreover the „eternal” knight remains in winning position. Steinitz composed severely: „On the sixth row strenghtened knight throttles the opponent. Already i could take a walk, the victory is sure thing!”. (I. Bilek)

After 31.Be1: It is a horrible view!  And not only horrible, but white will to collapse: the feared knight will get leading role. (I. Bilek)

After 31… Nf4!!: Superb finishing, but now must the blood of a snail! After 32.Red2 isn’t good Nxg2 because of 33.h3 Qg6 34.Rxg2. For this reason this is the winning continuation: 32… Nh3+ and a.) 33.Kf1 Rf8+ 34.Bf2 Nxf2 35.Rxf2 Rxd1+ 36.Qxd1 Qxd1 mate.

                          b.) 33.Kh1 Bf8! 34.Bg3 (for 34.Bf2? next Nxf2+ 35.Rxf2 Rxd1+) Nf2+ (again the knight is in leading role) 35.Bxf2 (after 35.Kg1 next Nxd1! 36.Rxd7 Qxd7) Rxf2 (threats mate on g2) 36.Rxf2 Rxd1+ Curtains!
