Hungarian hussars on the chessboard

Submitted by cgs on Fri, 04/04/2008 at 11:54am.

Not only on battlefield were Hungarian hussars, but on the chessboard too. The piece of Knight we Hungarians named for Hussar. The word hussar also origins from Hungarian "huszár". In the next example I'll show how possible mate in 6 with one Hussar. On the picture we can see a Hungarian hussar captain. The example is from book of Philip Stamma (Stamma's Hundert Endspiele, Berlin, 1856) This is the 65th example from the 150.

Thank you David! First of all in name of my compatriots. Do you know? Maróczy was the schoolmaster of Max Euwe. They were in good friendship. Maróczy hadn't money to invite the world-champion, but educated two World Champion: Euwe and Vera Mentschik. Stay as a kindly guest at my site ever! Read my new article!

Nice endgame, cgs.

The man who taught me to play chess was Hungarian as was my first chess club (Maroczy CC in Sydney).  While I was there I got to play simuls against Lajos Portisch and Gyula Sax (as well as Max Euwe who visited the club).  A few years later the Polgars visited Australia and I was fortunate enough to play Susan. (Judit, who was only about 12 years old at the time, also gave a simul).

So I've had very happy chess memories of Hungary and the Hungarians.  Great people!  Thanks for the reminder.
