17th Annual Chicago Open - Round 2 - First win

Submitted by chessiq on Wed, 05/28/2008 at 10:45pm.

After losing the first game with White, I decided to study/review the King's Indian Defense and use it as Black against 1.d4. In the previous couple of tournaments, I had played the Gruenfeld Defense. Going to this tournament, I had not settled on any Defenses against 1.d4, but after losing to a K.I.D. in the first game, I decided to get over the loss by passing on the pain of losing to K.I.D. to other people. So, here is my annotated first win; five more to come.

Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

shuttlechess92 said: just to get technical (don't hate me!) that wasn't the king's indian defense, it was benomi territory (after c5) and he didnt play the king's indian attack, he played the modern benomi variation.

However, you played it in king's indian defense flavor so I'm not complaining."

Chessiq's response: Thanks for pointing that out. (I am assuming you are correct Surprised) - I am not that good with openings, opening names, etc. Granted, I should have researched it before giving it a name. I will do better in the future. May be I will skip the whole name thing if I am too... lazy/occupied ;-)

Thanks for the congratulations and the compliments.

Shadowc, you are right. In the notes to 10. Qc2, I meant to say Bd2, not Be2. Thanks for the catch. Hopefully, I will get time over the weekend to fix it.

10. Qc2

"Not sure about this move. I considered ...Be2 followed by ...Qc1. Or ...Rb1 and ...b4."

I think it's Bd2 what you want to say, just s little correction ;-p
