2008 Mid-America Open - game 4

Submitted by chessiq on Sat, 03/08/2008 at 10:55am.

Here is another Grunfeld Defense which almost went wrong!

After winning three games in a row the day before, a friend told me that I was the only one with 3 points after 3 rounds in our section, U2000. It was exciting. Could I make it 4-0? This was a pretty tough game... I lost a pawn on the Queenside and I decided to shift the game to the Kingside and try to mate my opponent. The pressure on his King worked and with this win, I was closer to my dream of winning all my games in this tournament. I have annotated the game, and I welcome your ideas, suggestions, and comments.

kajani, nice to hear from you! Long time! You are right in pointing out that 28.Qc2 enables 29. b5. I would like to claim that I saw that continuation, that is why I played 28... Qe6. However, my annotations do not back me up! I guess the only sure way to tell what you were thinking during the game is to annotate as you play, which is not allowed, and can be distracting.

Thanks for the comment/explanation!

Great game!

Tenacious is the word.

White's Qc2 on move 28. He might have been planning b5?!.since your Q is pinned with the Rook on a6. playing b5 earlier, you might have just captured. it was just a possibility...

Good game...
