Annotated Miniature 3: Janis Klovans - Mikhail Tal (0-1)

Submitted by chessiq on Sun, 10/04/2009 at 6:32pm.

This game features one of the greatest Chess tacticians of all time, Mikhail Tal. He plays the Rubinstein Variation of the French Defense. Black takes over the initiative right from the start. White pays for his passive and inaccurate play in 18 moves.

I have annotated the game, move by move. Please free to comment or share your ideas.

@ miguelcol1978, Your variation is pretty good and appears (to me) to give White some counterplay.

@ gmaellex, you asked for "similarly annotated games"... well, if you are looking for games annotated move by move, i think you should be able to find some at my blog both here at chess.com and at chessthinking.com

I would like to know:

what if

15. Nxe5, Qxe5. 16. Ra2, Qxe4. 17 Re2, Bh3+. 18 Kg1

Would white have any counter play?

Ozzes306 , I completely understand what you mean. Actually, I had thought about it, but chose an easier/quicker way out (for me). It may be easier or quicker to do the alternate lines, but I just haven't invested the time to learn to do it. I will some day!

Good job, I would recommend putting some alternate lines to explain the alternate moves you wrote.

Judging by the moves, Janis is probably a 1200 rated player.

Tal is brilliant and all, but I feel like it was more of white's messing up than anything else.
