A Reason to Play the Accelerated Dragon

The Accelerated Dragon has a tricky move order that often bust unsuspecting 1.e4 players who treat it as a regular Classical Dragon. Belonging to the 3 main Dragon Relatives, its move order is as follows:
  1. e4 c5
  2. Nf3 Nc6
  3. d4 cxd4
  4. Nxd4 g6 (see diagram on the right)
The move order has developed a knight on c6 instead of a pawn on d6. This is one of the main reason why most players play the Accelerated Dragon because it allows the black pawn thrust to d5 in one go. It means that if White blindly make his opening moves for a Yugoslav Attack formation in auto-pilot mode, Black in effect will be a tempo up after the thematic pawn thrust ...d5. To better comprehend the idea let's compare positions between the Classical Dragon and the Accelerated Dragon where in both cases White goes for a Yugoslav Attack set-up.... (continuation)

At least c6 frustrates the intended d5 intrusion, and  the struggle goes on.  At 65 I am already too old to further research all the variations of the Maroczy.  I just react to what is presented (with blunders at times, like giving away a queen for free) based on my wealth of experience and book readings, most of which I have difficulty remembering.  But when I got a lot of sleep, at times I can still come up with some flashes of brilliancy.  Want to re-visit some games with Chessmagic 5.  He..he..he.

You are probably right about Maroczy Bind for above 2600 elo ratings. But really the Maroczy Bind is not a refutation against Accelerated Dragon. Recent international results have shown that Black can hold -and even win.

The variation posted here with ...d5 pawn push is a must learn line for an accelerated dragoneer. Why? Because in my experience this position happens a lot especially at club level. Imagine if you are an expert with this particular line, the majority of the outings will be a sure win because you have studied it thoroughly. Just look at the results presented at the end of the article in the continuation page.

I hope to encourage you, mate :-)

The reason that the position described at the end is not found in games above 2600 ELO is that usually the Accelerated Dragon would be met with 5.c4  the Marcozy Bind.  Still, I'm a fan, but I wouldn't put to much study into an Accelerated Dragon that is met with the Yugoslav Defense.  I would study the Marcozy Bind.  But that's just me, personally.  The Sicilian Defense is definitely the most titillating in my book, and I appreciated the post as it certainly enlightened me a bit.  I will study this variation you give as it is important to know just how to take advantage of white's blunder.  Probably only for a little while though Wink
