Drunk driving, An ignorant action

On 31 Jan '87 my life was drastically changed forever. I, at the age of 51 never in my life thought that  i'd be in the physical condition Im in now. On the afore mentioned date, almost 25 yrs ago I, because of a state employeed inebriated alcohol couselor, changed my life forever after, while intoxicated, went down the wrong way on I-95 thus causing a head on collision with the vehicle I was operating.I was one of three occupants in the vehicle, being the driver, & the most seriously injured. The total time spent hospitalized w/ follow up Rehab was almost 18 months of my life. I was TBI or Traumatic Brain Injured along w/ a fractured mandible, hip, & multiple fractures sustained to my lower extremities. Arthritis started on my leg approxamatly 12 yrs ago & now has proggressed to the point that I cannot ambulate w/o a cane &/or crutch. Im in pretty much relentless pain & discomfort. I recently went thru Morphine with drawels as I was taking 120mg's a day. Upon running out, I truly had a taste of hell.

Im basically trying to convey a message, that regardless how careful you are, your life CAN IN FACT change w/o warning. The tragic thing about this in '89, I lost a 17year old brother whom was also the victim of a drunk driver. One must remember that many times our own fate & that of others are in the hands of others. The problem is  many of us have this "I dont give a damn" attitude.

So please, If you can refrain from drinking & drivng. Save yourself the aggravation.

No I didnt take it the wrong way mate not at all. I enjoy our games. What a funny system this site has the comments seem to be out of the right order, nevermind. So you will be 52! I  just recently turned 51. Now we are over another hill, as in the fifth decade of our lives. Didnt feel to me much different to this time ten year ago really, except more grey hairs in some places and no hair in others! Tim

Hey champ, I hope my counter comment responding to yours 'bout my moves had no bad tydings. If in fact u took it wrong it was in no way ment to be. I have a great admiration for you & have every intention in countinuing our on going encounters w/ each other. Thanks for the compliment issued to me in relation to our last game (Took long enough, but I's finally got's ya!).Looking forward as always to our next upcoming games. With my 52nd birthday next month, another victory would be ( As the old sayin goes, "Just what the proverbial doctor ordered!") a great gift to myself. CHEERS!

Ha.. only having a joke about your terrible moves. you made an astounding one halfway through our last game opening up an attack on my right flank. I get really bad headaches now and then and I know it affects my games. Well, thats my excuse! Tim

Thanks for the reply & feedback Tim. It would seem that the steps taken in England would help to deter the usage of auto's while undr the influense, but sadly, this is only wishful thinking. Im not aware of Englands problem w/ intoxicated operaters, but here in America it is a very real & deadly problem. Law enforcement has in fact curbed the frequency, but its still a very real, on going problem.

In reference to yr comment/remark 'bout my terrible chess moves, I do in fact know that my usage of pain medication has a profound effect on my cognition, but it wouldnt seem so in the last game we played now would it mate?

        Anticipate a rematch champ!.......Keith

Hi Keith, Its hard to start a comment on this submission of yours. Perhaps though by making a comment as you have it might raise more awareness on both sides of the ocean of the real but so often ignored danger especially at this time of year of driving after having a drink or two.  It has certainly reinforced my own determination not to drink at all if I am going to drive anywhere. But also people need to remember they can still be affected up to 12 hours after having drinking alcohol. In my country (England) I found out that this time of the year the Police regularly mount operations to catch out the previous nights drinkers going to work. Of course you cant turn back the clock but by making this post you have at least brought into stark vivid reality the possible consequences. One further point and I dont mean to be flippant making it but I having a drink definately affects your ability to consider your position when making a move in chess, any move, even the opening! Keith I hope you are able to find better pain management and that it doesn't also contribute to the terrible moves you make in chess!   Tim

I needed to address an issue that arose, which is why my ending was abrupt, Instead of saving yourself the aggrvation, keep yourself from the very real chance of killing or severly hurting someone. Sadly, this happens everyday. Use your head, dont become a statistic!
