dsachs's Blog

Welcome! This is where I will post and analyze my own OTB games. While my chess isn't the strongest I hope the explanations of my plan prove interesting enough for fellow players. I'm also thinking about posting about lesser known Grandmasters and their games, since I feel everyone has been Kasparov'd and Ivanchuk'd and Fischer'd to the point of boredom.

Ontario Open Rds 1-4

Submitted by dsachs on Tue May 19, 2009 12:35pm.

I played in the Ontario Open this weekend. I had to withdraw after round 4 because I had a job interview the next day, and unfortunately work outranks chess. Also unfortunate was my score of 3/4, only a half point behind the leader with 3.5/4. So... Read more »

IChessU chmp Rd 5

Submitted by dsachs on Fri May 15, 2009 5:14pm.

I'm not posting my game from round 4 because it was a win in under 10 moves and thus rather boring. I played Round 5 in the www.IChessU.com championship yesterday. Unfortunately I'm definately no longer a contender for the prize. I lost this game... Read more »

IChessU chmp. Rd 3

Submitted by dsachs on Mon May 4, 2009 11:37am.

I played the third round of the IChessU championship yesterday. I had White and things were going really well for me. As per the usual, I blunder away a nice position. It's frustrating but instructive. The opening was Sicilian Defence, Rossolimo v... Read more »

IChessU Championship Rd 2

Submitted by dsachs on Sun May 3, 2009 1:45pm.

So I'm playing in a tournament through my chess school. This is my game from Round 2. I won with no major mistakes, which was a refreshing change of pace. I had the black pieces, and the opening was Nimzo-English. It became Nimzo-Indian through tr... Read more »

Nimzo-Indian and Isolated Queens Pawn

Submitted by dsachs on Sun Mar 29, 2009 3:39pm.

Nimzo-Indian is a Black defence against d4. It's a hypermodern defence against white playing a pawn to e4. "Hypermodern" is a chess philosophy from the 1920s which prefers controlling the centre with pieces instead of occupying the centre with paw... Read more »

Knight vs connected passed pawns

Submitted by dsachs on Tue Mar 24, 2009 12:53pm.

I found something interesting about the endgame 2 pawns vs Knight. I had played a game this weekend with this endgame (plus a few miscellaneous pieces on the edge of the board). That game drew so I put it into a endgame tablebase to see what the c... Read more »

COM RD 2 3 and 4

Submitted by dsachs on Sun Mar 22, 2009 6:40pm.

I suppose I'm kinda obligated to post these games, even though I am totally embarassed. So yeah. They're kinda funny. My opponents only win due to huge mistakes on my part. Lucky jerks. Read more »

COM Rd 1 Frechette vs Dsachs 1-0

Submitted by dsachs on Fri Mar 20, 2009 8:50pm.

Nothing is worse than losing a won game, but that's what happened tonight. But, I am happy with my play in any event, even if I do make a gross blunder that takes the game from a drawn position to a lost one. My opening and first thirty moves are... Read more »

Coach vs dsachs 0-1

Submitted by dsachs on Wed Mar 18, 2009 1:05pm.

Beat my coach again! :) I have been experimenting with different ways to play Black against d4. Since I don't play d4 myself I'm not very familiar with the defences Black can choose from. My criteria for selecting an opening is pretty straightfor... Read more »

dsachs v Sicilian Taimanov 0-1

Submitted by dsachs on Mon Feb 9, 2009 8:04pm.

Had a game with my coach just now. Time control was game in 40. The opening was Sicilian and he tried something new in the Taimanov. I think I did okay until a blunder at the very end. I finished with 2 minutes on my clock, which is great because ... Read more »
