All the middle aged dudes down at the club who can't be bothered to learn opening theory are going to have a rough time when this puppy arrives!
That is a good quote.
I hear ya, there's a really great quote by an older chess master which I can't quite remember but goes something like:
"If you play the London System or anything like it then you probably hate life, since you seem to revel in sucking all the enjoyment out of things."
Lucky for me I've never lost an OTB game against any of those systems, but I want to make sure I never do!
What a great idea for a book. I, like many others, absolutely despise the London, Colle and Torre systems (and their amorphous cousins). The use of these systems always strikes me as somewhat cowardly and more than a little uninspired. This is going to sound melodramatic but I really do believe that their use constitutes an aesthetic (or moral?!?) concession on the part of first player, the point being that I believe it is the responsibility of both players to make a good faith effort to play chess that is interesting, entertaining or fun. In my view, these systems strive for none of those goals.
I realize that not everyone is going to agree with that statement and that's fine, I'm not trying to convert anyone to my cause. I'm just saying that given a choice between playing someone who uses one of these 'opening' systems and one who who plays a proper opening, I'd opt for the latter and I suspect I wouldn't be alone.
I look forward to the book.
