A Hard Move for Me to Make!

Submitted by erik on Thu, 11/22/2007 at 9:41pm.

In this interesting game where powerful bishops prevented us each from castling I  made a move that I think was really good, but it was not an easy move for me to make. My opponent was higher rated and I was nervous, but I really felt like it was the right move to make. Do you agree?

When your bishop came to a6 it stopped him castling and it was still in the game. It ended up playing a huge part inthe winning move. But when his bishop came to h6 it was immediately out of play. Still needed a good finish, though, and you supplied it. SpectacularSmile

Erick

Nice game  nice offence even you were black.

Have you palyed some one who is 1600 in 10 days and does not use conventional startegies . I make fast short cuts with sacrifice but put either the king or the queen in real danger, some thing you did in your game above.

Thats how I play thats how afghans fought flunks of Alexander the great in 330 BC the red army in 1980s. Although I am not  military person but as an educator ,historian, I observed the growth of popular resestance , the technology and tactics of their attacks against heavyartilary and and the buracracy of the convincional wars.

I have played chess for 30 yrs but mostly in irregualr intervals and with diverse people.I know not much about the openings, or famous chess players . to that effect I can be considered as beginer on an illeterate , as I have not read music and chess but I entertain and challenge profissionals.

Last night I got the queen of a friend (Goldenbear) in a beartrap and took pictures of it, i told him he is geting closer to a beartrap, but he didnt believe it till it was too late.

I have moved from 0 to 1600 in last 10 days. If interested I want to play with you after seeing your moves ,I know you are profissional but I would have played it to the end difrently.

2nd point ,I have some technical shortcomming in IT and couldnt join a tournament  1400 to 1800. One was missed feb 25 I believe. Could you arrange or help me to get into one of these coming tournaments. Currently I simply challenge this or that fellow from diffrent countries and continents and have played with about 30 sofar.

Also I have 2 points ( medals) in my profile. I dont know what does it mean and in which games I have got it under what conditions or terms.Does pint mean No of trophies .

Wish you luck and greater successes.

It looks like he lost concentration.  I see a very well played game by you.  Its almost obvious what you are doing but not so obvious on what to do.  I probably would have started defending myself instead of attacking nothing, like he did.  You were right about feeling naked in that situation.  I probably would have put you in check from there.

just catching this. This is a great game, where both players maintain a very aggressive approach. Erik, you did a great job of equalizing early in the game. I think the full equalization occurred as you pushed your pawn to gain tempo on his bishop, and then accepted the trade of knights.

It seems so obvious in hindsight, but bringing in the queen's rook to b8 was very strong.

Phobetor makes excellent points in his reply, above. Everyone should take what he has to say quite to heart.

That was definitely a game not for people with heart trouble. It resembles the Horowitz vs Seidman game in 1942 (See the "King vs King" short article). 14...Qh5 returns the 14.Qf4 "favor", I don't know if I could come up with something like that. Good job Erik, I guess your opponent didn't realized he was playing against the Big Boss, LOL.

good game Erik. i think 13 Rb1, gaining control of the open b-file(important to both sides), would give White a descent game.

Such moves should come instantly. Some people worry too much about general principles, when what really matters is just making good moves and improving the position. Moving your king before castling is "in general" considered bad, but you always have to look at the circumstances. Here white has nothing, especially since he gives up his lightsquared bishop to make your king move (thus not being able to check your king on d7 anymore). Really activating your queen (on a5 it's very strong), getting rid of your worst piece (Nd7) and getting rid of one of his most annoying pieces, getting the bishop pair, connecting your rooks (and thus also helping your development) all outweigh the "disadvantage" of moving your king.

On another site I saw someone who commented on a game he played against his opponent, and he went as far as saying that his opponent's h7-h5 was a very weak move, exposing his king and not doing much. It turned out to be a good move, setting up a strong kingside attack, and there was no way for him to exploit the "exposed king".

But that's just a side-comment illustrating that you shouldn't just blindly follow "general principles". They're more important to beginners who don't know what they're doing than experienced players who move their king with a good reason like here Smile

But still I can imagine that it may have been a hard decision to make. You made the right decision, and as you saw in your game, your king wasn't that exposed, but he however quickly got in alot of trouble.
