Amazing Life-size Artistic Chess Set!

Submitted by erik on Tue, 03/24/2009 at 4:53pm.

One of my friends and a Chess.com member, Hardy Jones, has been working on a life-size chess set for the last two years! He's getting close to completing it and I wanted to share some awesome pictures of the set.

Hardy is a local (and quite famous!) artist who specializes in iron work. It is amazing to be in his backyard and experience all of the awesome things he has created.

His giant chess set is a huge task! He had to come up with ideas for all of the different pieces and make them both artistic and distinguishable. He has picked "themes" to go along with the colors - the "fleur de lis" vs. the "Irish cross".

He's going to debut this set in a few months time in his backyard, which he has temporarily dubbed "Marvin Avenue Chess Club".

I'm excited for him - an amazing creation from an amazing man!

Am I the only one that got disappointed when I saw the knight? I had this idea of Sitting on top and commanding my chess game until I saw the tines of a rake pointed directly at my vitals!

Imagine playing a few quick or blitz games with these pieces. Must be quite the workout.

Part of me admires this guy's love of chess & another part of me says, "man, he must have had some spare time on his hands I wish I had"...

Little bit of grinding the rough welds and they would look fine.  He looks like a good man in the pic.

That's very cool.  Be sure and let us know who wins the first game.
