I think Kaprpov-Korchnoi was both politically and emotionally charged.
People do have a tendency to drown in the depths of chess, but I would say that other games have proven themselves to be equally or more addictive, especially computer games. Do these gamers exhibit mental instability (I don't know, maye they do)?

I think the 1978 Karpov / Korchoi was a bit weird on both sides.
I don’t think that Rubinstein (or Mieses) enjoyed chess because either one was eccentric ( though Rubinstein most definitely had issues). But the addictiveness of the game and its very nature may attract people with a certain type of mental instability.
You think Korchnoi (or Karpov?) is crazy??
and you think Rubinstein (or Mieses?) enjoyed chess because he was eccentric?
It might have been Tal who said something to the effect that the chess didn't make sane people crazy, but kept crazy people sane.
