Welcome New Players

Submitted by grimreaper1973 on Fri, 02/08/2008 at 2:04am.

Hello to all new players!

If you are completely or relatively new to chess feel free to play against me.  We can teach each other as we go.  I am looking for people that will stick with me and progressively improve their game as they go, and I feel with practice mine will improve as well.

Experienced players - I am a little scared of you because I have only been studying/playing chess for 4 months.  If you want to help that's fine, but don't play me just to humble me.  I know I suck at chess compared to you.

Any tips clues comments or questions I will try to answer as quickly as possible for new players.  I suggest clicking as many links in the site as possible, as there is a lot of great stuff to play around with.  The trainer is awesome (even if limited on how long you can use it), the blogs are great for getting your ideas out "at the speed of thought" (ok, half jokingly there), and love the way you can save your games and the moves you make.  I will play my friend and then copy/paste my moves onto notepad for future reference.

Drop me a line, anyone, anytime!  Just be polite please :)

I have been playing a plethora of games of late - thanks to all for your good sportsmanship and beating me soundly - the only time I won was on time :).

So far at least...but the important thing is I have been learning the "every action has a reaction" principle.  When I first started chess, I had no idea why someone would want to play a piece the way they did (for an opening, for example).

I am also finding that my game is "quite unconventional" thus far...lol...

Just wanted to say thanks to all who have played with me - you have all been great.  Many thanks to Che and Hacettepe (apologies on spelling) for their great end games.

hey mcw.

Thanks for the feedback.  Will challenge you now :)

J ust found a few people at work that like to play.  I admit while I am not that good at thinking ahead that chess allows me to try to do so.  I like the idea that if this happens...I do this.  But if that happens...I do that.  Permutations and such.

Finally beat "little chess dude" last week.  It was over so quick I scratched my head and said "HOW did I do that?".  I also tried to save the game, but my crappy computer wouldn't let me do that.  ended up with his king in the left corner (I was black) held there by a pawn, bishop, and queen covering his diagonals.  It was a good feeling to finally win!

Hello Grim (or is it Mr Reaper?) How are you doing?

Just read your post and I'd love to help if I can. I know my rating is scarily higher than you - that's because I'm not bad at chess. However, I'm also a teacher. Not officially a chess teacher - I teach IT and guitar - but I love teaching and I enjoy trying to help people to improve their game. I won't deliberately play badly, but I'll always explain what I'm doing and why I'm doing it and give you hints about your moves and general tactics as we go along.

If you want to read a little bit about what other people think of me, feel free to go to the group I'm in - The Ulsterman's Way - where a few things have been posted about me. Feel free to join the group as well, if you like.

No pressure but if you're interested, please challenge me on a 14 day timescale. If you prefer, leave the game unrated so if you lose, your rating won't go down.

If not, hope you continue to enjoy the site and benefit from it as I know I have.

All the best and hope to hear from you.

Mal
