Toronto Labour Day Open (Part 1)

Submitted by ih8sens on Tue, 09/08/2009 at 9:16am.

As promised, my games from the Labour Day open.  I was fortunate enough to go undefeated... and unfortunate enough to still finish out of the money! (4 of my 6 games drew).

I've annotated them all ... haven't checked any with Rybka... hopefully my annotations are fairly accurate.

Not a bad result in the first game, but it certainly could have been more eventful.  Maybe game 2 would be more interesting.

Yeah I've already checked it out :P ... on b4 I was (somewhat irrationally) afraid of a5, leaving my pawn feeling a lil' overextended.  The h3 anti-marshalls are all I've ever faced.  Although most people just let me play it...

8.a4 is one of the most popular anti-marshall variations of all time. If you check out chesspublishing.com you will see that 1.e4 e5 writer GM Viktor Mikahlevski believes that 8...b4 is the favourite of master level players against this move (currently Aronian's choice in several games). I think you should invest time studying it, as I have faced it as white (hint, hint) and it is very difficult to get anything against. It certainly isn't less known!

It turns out, in the first game... that the intermezzo 20. ... g6! wins for me ... he never had any chances :)

Game 2 was ugly though... he was better throughout... an early e5 break was key!

nice work drawing a couple of 1900's! i think white could ahve got an advantage in your first game because you dark squared bishop was quite weak.

wow your opponent laughed at you for getting a draw, you should have laughed at his opening! i can't believe you didn't crush that guy in your second game.
