Pawn Endgames: Part I

Submitted by invaderX17 on Fri, 05/01/2009 at 4:51pm.

Pawns are very useful in the endgame. In the endgame, when there is not much material on the board, pawns can be easily promoted and go waltzing into queen. Take this for example:

Nathan Chan(1423) vs.Ben Wang(1285) 0-1 2/5/06

Here, I was black. My opponent gave me a chance to win. I was lucky I didn't resign because there was still some play left. Anyway, that was a pawn endgame battle. Pawns are very special because they could be promoted. Yes, and when you have a pawn, be sure not to let your opponent stop it!

A tip for a King and Pawn vs. King endgame is always to keep your king IN FRONT of the pawn. That way, the black king can't get near it.

In the first position, Black actually dropped his Rook; later, after the pawn check on f2, White should have moved his King to blockade the pawn on f1, not away.

And khpa21 is absolutely right; after 4.e3, the game is a dead draw after Black takes the opposition.

I agree pawns are very useful from my personal experience I would win by promoting a pawn and checkmate.

Actually, in the second position, 4. e3?? is a critical blunder. 4. Kf5! wins. After 4. e3??, Black plays 4... Ke6!, stealing the opposition and denying White access to the pawn's critical squares, thus drawing. If you are going to post K+P vs. K endings, please make sure they have no flaws.
