White Sacrifices Everything

Submitted by kenytiger on Sat, 02/16/2008 at 10:17am.

This is the most amazing game I have ever seen, it was posted by Billwall a few months ago. White sacrifices all his pieces except for a Knight and is still able to deliver a sweet smothered mate.

Henry Ernest Atkins (1872-1955) won the Amsterdam tourney in 1899 by a whopping 4 points. In the Hanover 1902 tournament he was 3rd behind David Janowski and Harry Nelson Pillsbury and ahead of Frank Marshall and Mikhail Tchigorin, amongst others. He was 10th out of 16 at London 1922 and also represented the British Chess Federation in the Olympiads of 1927 and 1935.

"Henry Atkins was a British International Master who liked playing the Danish Gambit.  He won the British Championship 9 times between 1905 and 1925 (7 in a row starting in 1905). Here is a game in which he won by playing a Danish Gambit and swindling his way to a smothered mate.  By the way, he sacrificed some pawns, both is bishops, a knight, both his rooks and his queen!  He finally mated with a lone knight."

Would love to have been inside the mind of black ... he must have thought white had lost his mind.

Mschosting, that game was posted by Billwall back in July 2007.

I got the game from him. He might be able to tell you where he got it from. That's a good question.

Even with 17...Nxe7 white would have had a victory as he could have gone on to exchange his knight for- black's rook, knight then bishop, along with the straggling and exposed pawns,  leaving black with very little chance to stop white from queening with one of the three kingside pawns. Assuming it reached that stage.

Maybe Jacobs saw the inevitable and sought a quick end.

That is one of the more  awesome games I've ever seen. The guy seems, at first,to be throwing his pieces away, but it all leads to mate- when Black is 16 pawns in material up, and it doesn't mean a darn thing.
