After 26.Nxe6 the black rook has nowhere to go, since 26...Rg6 fails to 27.Bh5 Rh6 28.Qg4 and Black drops the rook on g6 or is mated at g7, for example 28...Qb7 29.Rb1! Qe7 (29...Qxb1 30.Qxg7#) 30.Rc1 and Black's center pawns will fall after Rxc6.
