Very clever! The point of 41...d4 is to recruit a second passed pawn decisively. 42. Nxd4? loses quickly to 42...Bc3!, while 42. exd4? loses to 42...Rd3+(I missed this move, but Fritz didn't). Therefore, the pawn cannot be captured and Black will just push it to d2, breaking White's facade.
