Adding a game

Submitted by kohai on Mon, 08/03/2009 at 10:40am.

If you go into your games archive and click "View" next to the game you want to enter into the blog or forum thread.

Click on the small tab marked "Moves" then on "Get PGN"

You can choose which format you want this downloaded as, i have mine saved in "notepad" and i save it to my desktop so its easier to find.

Once this has downloaded, locate it on your computer, and open in "Notepad", then minimise it. ( you'll need it in a minute)

Either go into the forum topic you'd like to make a new post in, or onto your blogs page and create new blog.

You'll see the toolbar options as shown. Click on the small chessboard icon

The "Game Editor" will then open.

This is where you get to choose which type of game you want others to view.

In this case, its a game that can be played all of the way through so i've selected "Games or sequence of moves"

Click on the "continue" button.

The next box, is where you'll need the PGN you have minimised. Open that document, then using the top options, click on Edit - Select All - Edit - Copy

then minimise the notepad again.

In the diagram below it shows i've checked the "PGN" option. Paste the PGN details that you copied from the notepad into that box

Click the bottom right "Continue" button. This then shows you a choice of what you want the reader to see.

*NOTE

See where the cursor is ? This is so you can alter the game format for if you're entering a chess960 game or a standard game

Once you're happy with how you have this set up and have entered any text for "comments before moves" or "comments after moves" (this is optional)

Click on "Next Step"

This page now lets you design the board and pieces

Once you've finished designing  your board and pieces, use the bottom Left button where it says "Insert"

The game editor will then close and place your game into the blog / forum post.

Don't be alarmed to see it showing as this;

Thats how it's supposed to look, until you click on "Submit blog" (or forum post)

If you want to make any adjustments to the game itself, simply click on the blog again, then on "Edit".

Click on the game itself, then on the little chessboard icon.

The game will then re-open into the game editor where you can make any changes.

Hope this is of some help :)

Say_Goodknight:  I just tried this, and the only problem I ran into was with justification of the text. Originally I had the games I posted center justified, and in the editing process, the text ended up that way too, which I didn't want.

This might work for you.

I prepare my  blog on an ordinary word processor (I use Star Open Office but MS Word works the same way) and insert the game position as text.

So,

yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda

BOTVINNIK—TAL

yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda

Now copy and paste the whole thing to the blog.

Once you've done that, highlight the "BOTVINNIK TAL" location, click on the chess board to insert the game or problem, and format as you usually do.  That way you can keep the text left-justified while you  centre the diagram.

When I posted this week's blog there was no provision for centring the diagram. It might have been a glitch but it's more likely that, now the game moves are shown alongside the diagram, all diagrams will automatically use up all the available horizontal space.

NB: There's a minor problem with preparing your post this way.  When you preview the post you'll find a line of formatting shows up immediately before the first character.  Just go to "Edit", insert your cursor before that character, and backspace.  (One backspace should be enough to remove the lot.)

Hope that helps.  If you need more, message me.

What about changing the justification of the text? As I said, my text editor isn't displaying any justification tools in the toolbar.

After you've inserted the game into the blog / forum thread, click on it again, then on the little chessboard icon ... this then allows you to edit the game.

Go into "design" tab, and you can then change the alignement

I just tried this, and the only problem I ran into was with justification of the text. Originally I had the games I posted center justified, and in the editing process, the text ended up that way too, which I didn't want. I went back to the game editor and changed the games to left-justified, which is the way I wanted the text to be, but the text remained the same. And contrary to what the help menu for this text editor says, there are no tools for changing text justification displayed in the tool bar of my text editor.

Can someone please help with this?

I've been waiting for some instruction on this, and have even asked about how to post and edit games in other threads, but have received no reply. This is very helpful; thanks a lot.

Thanks, Kohai, that's easier than the way I've been doing it.  With one exception I've been unable to post Chess960 games and this method should certainly work for that as well.

Nice explanation, Kohai, and useful screenshots - that must have taken quite a while! Cool   I use Chesscat to open pgn files and copy them, but otherwise I do just the same.
