I know many members on here who say their opponents take an age to move so when i came across this in the news, i thought i'd share it with you

The only thing running whiskey through your hair would make me think is that you dont even have enough self control to get through a chess tournament. Translation....alcohol problem...
That was awesome!! When you think about it, it was a pretty smart thing to do. He got a ton of publicity from it, who would care what the 60ish best player in the world does.....ahhh...but wait, this guy makes headlines......sponsers anyone?
I dont think he should be fined, the guy obviously partied really hard the previous night and the only consequences he should suffer is trying to play hungover. He lost, and its his own fault.
hmmm i wonder if it would be fair to run a few shots of whiskey through your hair in an important OTB tournament, smell up the place and make your opponent think you are drunk.lol! Definite distraction i think!!
I am new here but there does seem to be some abuse of time going on.
I recently had an opponent go on 'vacation' just after I made my opening move... and I was playing white!
I am one of the players who uses the available time per move. But that doesn't mean I time-out. It's up to each player to use the time how he likes it within the time out borders.
Basically I prefer to play faster games rather than slower, so I rarely play anything other than 1-day or 3-day games.
That's not everybody's thing of course and I refused a challenge from one guy who wanted a 14-day game on the grounds that, at my age, I'd probably be dead before we finished. I mean, how would I be able to rest in peace if I had a winning combination in play and no means of completing it? Forget about the eternal fires the fundamentalists preach: that's my definition of Hell.
I played a few 1-day "no vacation" tournaments and was happy about that until I ran into a problem with my ISP. I was lucky to finish the tournament without incurring any time-outs. So, as appealing as they are, no more vacationless tourneys for me.
Probably he was just trying to catch some 'beauty' sleep.
1. Dunken / Sleeping player. It's a shame for all of us.
I remember once playing the "Preliminar" -the first phase of our national tournment- and because of someone in my family health problems, I go to play without sleeping. I drank tons of coffe to be as asleep as I can, strugle for a quick wining position -I was playing another player I know quite well I know that was not difficult-, and... offer a draw.
I was sure that I will hang a Queen or a Tower at any moment.
But as I think thar was the right thing to do when you're in troube because of sleeping problems, the wrong is exactly provoking that problems and then facing a game... and don't even resign!
2. I like chess moves because it's slow. I prefer to play 3 days/move and in another servers, I play 7 days/move and 10 moves/50 days.
The good thing is that there will be opponents for each taste. Noone is olbigued to play 1day/move games, nor 5m/d.
some have limited computer acess
I can see where you are all coming from but for some people they have limited access to computers so cannot always move every day on chess sites. I play on other chess sites and i am still playing a game from May/June and it is frustrating ... i just usually play more games to occupy myself .... or chose 1 day per move games?
speaking of time, how about uploading an option where we set our time control, and not have to choose one of the preset ones?
'That's Awesome!!!!!!!!!
yea i wish there was a 12 hour move limit, sometimes 1 day is too long to wait for a move, but it depends
Maybe instead they should make a new modality of this... Hungover chess ... i mean we all know there is hungover accounting, hungover machine operating, hungover airplane piloting, hungover car racing and football playing....
No, but seriously what an idiot. They should fine him and ban him for a year or something. Its like getting to a big European team and then getting wasted and messing up your game. Playing anything for a living is a priviledge. Besides its very rude for your oponent to show you dont give a crap.
I'm surprised people were allowed to wake him up. That seems like getting outside help to me. I'd have protested that to the TD. Let the guy sleep and use up all his time, or wake up on his own and try to make a good move groggy and unnerved.
I don't know if it's possible but it would be interesting if we added an online game option of 12 hours per move. We have vote chess games of less than one day per move.
