My "Slowest" Tourney, Day 1

Submitted by likesforests on Sat, 03/21/2009 at 9:15pm.

Thanks for all the advice and well-wishes going into my first 30/90, G/60 tournament. I brought a CD player but never found occasion to use it--there were too many exciting things happening on my board and around me! The first games went well. Smile

Round 1: USCF 600 vs likesforests

Ironically, I faced a student I'm coaching in round 1.

Round 2: likesforests vs USCF 1600

In round 2 I faced the highest-rated player in the tournament.

draco_alpine > I thought they were really good games, I love the french but your students theory was a bit lax on it.

She normally opens d4 and plays a Colle. Unfortunately, I taught her everything she knows about it, so she tried something different. If she wanted to avoid theory at all costs, b4 or g4 would've been interesting alternatives!

draco_alpine > I really hate 4 vs 3 pawns and rook endgames i seem to draw everyone congratulations on the play!

Thanks! The win just required a little patience, especially since I entered the endgame with my rook in a better position. Smile

Thanks, hiectunc. I had a good night's sleep.

I'm simulataneously optimistic (having taken out the top seed) and worried (my future opponents will also have two wins).

> PS : in the 1st game, I noticed 26...e5 en passant

I immediately saw the possibility 26...e5 27.h5 exf4 28.hxg6 but decided not to calculate further as it introduced complications and I was a R+P up. Dagnabbit, if I had looked at 27...Rxf4 I would've played it. Gotta not be so lazy today. Embarassed

Congratulations on this very strong start !

Now the challenge is to keep your focus and not drift into overoptimism Smile

Good luck for the remaining games.

And don't forget to have good sleep ! Smile

PS : in the 1st game, I noticed 26...e5 en passant
