So I dove head first into the world of Chess rankings

Submitted by madsaxxon on Mon, 04/07/2008 at 11:23am.

…only to find just how shallow my pool of knowledge is! LOL but that was what I intended I guess. I wanted to lower my rank to see where I belong and see what I can do to improve it. One thing that has helped me, not including the help I was given be folks on line, was buying ‘Teach yourself chess visually’ by Jon Edwards. It was the only book that didn’t look too intimidating. I learn better by seeing at any rate. It seem to be just what I need, I JUST got it last night and haven’t started winning against other players BUT I can see my tactics getting better against the computer.

Hi Mike,  I have seen that book before, it is a good place to start.  Once you have read it through, played a few more game I would suggest rereading it.  I also agree with ttiot, you should pick up Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess as your second book.  It is totally visual, he introduces a concept then gives you a chess problem to solve.  When you have an answer turn the page and the answer is right on top followed by another problem to practice on.

Glad to hear you found a book you like, and good luck.

Hi Mike, good to see you playing more games and now it looks like your taking it serious, I checked out that book at amazon and it looks like it's a good beginners book with an overview on just about everything, I'd recommend skipping the chapters on openings, don't even worry about that at this time, just think tactics, eat, sleep, drink tactics, chess is 99% tactics. A very good beginners book on tactics is Bobby Fishcher Teaches Chess and you should be able to pick that up for dirt cheap, anyway, take care.
