What do YOU see when you look at a chess board?

…so far I have been seeing pieces to take. I am learning (slowly) that there is more to the game than that. Position is the most important thing; I am/was making a typical beginner mistake and moving every threatened piece or taking every offered piece the computer gave me. I am happy about a few small signs of progress, or at least I see it as progress. I have had games now that I have forced the king to move after he had castled and I have also got the computer to make wasteful moves, moves back and forth. I mean I know they were simply to draw me out but they didn’t significantly improve his position until I made a mistake move.

Anyhow, I wonder what other people see when they look at the chess board, is there a checklist they go through in their head before they make a move?

…anyhow I am off the book store this weekend and hope to play Ttiot a game or three and learn more. =)
