Who invented chess?

Chess is a very special game because of its very long history and its wide diffusion throughout the peoples of the earth, and its long association with many different cultures has enriched it and made it an intimate part of mans culture and heritage to a degree that no other game can claim.Whether the origins of chess go back only as far as 500-600AD when it was popular in India,or even much earlier as some claim back to 1000BD,When an Indian sage ZIGA BEN DAHER is said to have invented the game.

Yes that's about what i know roughly of it. It was called Shatdrat or something like that. I know the modern form of the game as we know it wasn't brought about until the 16th century. Not sure exactly whom made all the new rules and so on. But i got the impression it was over a period of time.

I have read that the game was invented that long ago but didn't know who the inventor of the game was.  Thanks for the additional information.
