What are the best methods to teach Elementary School children chess?

Previously taught at a library which has won several championships within the inter-library compention.

Right now I'm teaching at 3 schools with groups of 10-20 children.

Week 1 went smoothly, all the kids understand how the pieces move and rules.

Week 2 mostly watch to see how they interput my intructions, few mistakes.

--Notice that most players check, check, check thinking it will lead to checkmate. Situation they give check with the same piece and don't bring in there reserves and when they findly get frustrated that they're not makeing progress they use another piece to give the check and repeat the pattern.

Some games are like luck-mates while most allow there opponent to get in stalemate.  However, I can't be so critical to all; some are more systematic in their aproach and understand to limit the king's retreat and then deliver the fatal blow.

Now the hard part, trying to explain this in their language. (Am I insulting their intelligence? What is the best way, I wish I kept a journal of my progress when I was younger but I hated to write back then.
