Keep it simple: Make some prophylactical moves and then ... win!

Submitted by mauerblume on Sat, 05/30/2009 at 11:54pm.

Last week I played a training game in a chess club. So after winning a pawn in middlegame  we reached following position

It is an endgame with all heavy pieces on board. This is not so easy to play and to win. So how should I go on?

Put pressure on my opponent? Go on search for traps? Start with deep calculations? Look for kingside tactics? Or some other complicated stuff?

I decided to keep it simple and made some prophylactical moves. This stabilized my position and my adventage...and became the base for a winning attack

You may be right, alenkanh,

but my point was to win this game with simple moves .-

Your variation looks more complicated to me, more calculation is needed

Yes, you are right!-

So he seemed to have given up too early :-) -

***

But nevertheless there is with one or - better two  pawns - ahead a clear white adventage. My king looks safe and his is under attack! -

And the base of it were the prophylactical moves at the beginning!

I believe stronger than 8...e2 is 8... Qb1+ 9. Rc1 (or Kh2) Qxa2 two pawns up. In the e2 line, White could have played 11. Rb1 Qxg3+ (11... Qxb1 12. Qd4+ Kh7 13. Qxe3) 12. Kg1 Re1+ 13. Rxe1 Qxe1+ 14. Kh2 with an endgame one pawn up instead of two.
