Wishlist-- My Best Ideas for Chess.com

Submitted by meniscus on Thu, 08/06/2009 at 7:14pm.

  • This is what I most want--to watch chess heroes on chess.com! We could simply thicken the content that existing titled players submit. Why not contract with GMs and IMs like yourself--pro chess players need steady income anyway!

  • I've been watching... who is in charge of who is hired and when to put out the videos? They do a great job, of course, but an even better system would include the member feedback, eh? I think we should pay attn to the ratings from the users--surely then there would be more Perylshtein videos. Add more obligation than an article a week or 20-30 min video (which is live and unedited--and is paid for by us and the site, regardless of quality). There is no patent on how chess sites teach, of course. World Chess Live has Banterchess. We Need this, or a better version--in online chess, vote chess, and live chess. The titled players can't see eachother's kibitz but the observers can, and they teach by kibitzing plans and ideas during real games. We could have simuls, etc, OR just make a minimum amount of hours for them to spend as a presence in addition to logging on and submitting a PGN and a few annotations or, in some cases, putting out a video every once in a while. Everyone knows we need more GM Becerra's and IM Pruess's who are visible and teach us about this game!

  • Chess.com live annotated Relays-- I think this amounts to a local (site-wide) radio show. Sometimes it's nice to see what the players are doing real time. This is also good unannotated, though.

  • Pro-rated service for Gold--Platinum--Diamond rather than exclusion/inclusion. Something like 1 video/month for the gold, 4 for platinum, etc. Once you unlock a video, that's it until you pay again (for a gold member). I like Diamond access, but in 4 months I've already payed $50. The current system benefits those who would pay for a month, watch/record everything, then come back and get it all when a bunch of content comes in.

  • Provide competitions with prizes...subscriptions OR $$$! They don't have to be chess competitions where cheating is an issue! Why not content or improvement related tournaments, etc.. Competitions for the best articles, puzzle competitions, etc? Think about all the runner up submissions and content we'd get if we simply offered what chess.com pays for a video lesson as a prize for the best submission. We'd get a lot more than a video--a community event!

If you agree or disagree, please leave a comment!

Instead of real $ prizes, how about something like Chessbucks, currency that could only be spent here on chess.com.  They do this at the BoardgameGeek (a site devoted to general boardgames, not chess).

Maybe you could spend Chessbucks to add things to your profile (special graphics or whatever) and you could give them to chess.com friends or award them to others by running your own contests in your blog, etc.

How about small tournement and win a video ?
Or how about win a month platinum membership ?
Or how about winning unlimited chess puzzles?
(where chess.com chooses small teams based on live chess rating).

winning $$ for a good puzzle is a nice idea too, however how can one be sure also the puzzle wasnt get from somewhere else on the internet?
As for articles i think there are hundreds of people here who would probaply claim to be the best writters, or have a large fan group. Not that fair winning $$ should be something we all would make a fair chance for it i think. Besides most people have job so why is $$ important?

What might be an idea have for example a GM and have 100 dollar or so, then do voting chess, the person or group who wins, (had made the most correct moves) wins. removing the first 5 moves or so from the list of moves or it will be to much gamble.

how about before people can write an article they should have played here.
Some GM seam to write only. It would be more intresting if they also play.

If I remember correctly, the reason why Diamond and not Gold members have access to all videos is because Dimond is an extra $4 (I think) and unlimited Chess Mentor wasn't enough. It was to drag more people over to Diamond than Platinum/Gold.

Very nice suggestions, but I’ve noticed that Chess.com servers a diverse community of chess player with different goals and subsidize, and that’s why I like the way that Chess.com has set up it’s memberships. For example, as a casual player I don’t need the same membership as club player or professional player to improve my chess. Chess.com has too much material for me as a casual player, but probably not enough for professionals who may be able to write off their membership. All in all I think Chess.com is doing a wonderful job of finding the right balance to meet most of its member needs, and keep the membership fees within reason. The more services the next membership level.

I definately don't record them--but as long as people didn't redistribute for free I don't know if it would be theft either...

You're not supposed to be recording the videos. If you do, that's theft, if I'm not mistaken. So if you do, at least don't talk about it.

Now here's my wishlist.

I've been searching for a quick analysis board where I can play out a few moves, or set up a position, and then save into my own archive or library. I just need an online practice board or pgn editor for my own personal practice sessions where I could create my own games, WITHOUT having to set up a blog entry. I agree with alot of your suggestions. I would like to see something similar to what the ICC does with Game of the Day from the various tournaments going on that particular week.

Also, I believe something similar to BanterChess is happening in the Article Authors vs. Video Authors Vote Chess game going on now. Members will be able to see what their thoughts, plans, etc. were after the game ends. But I agree that more of that (I'm not sure whether they would make that premium content or not) would be great!
