Tournament Treasures

I think that Tournaments are a great place to rapidly learn new skills, as well as keeping the old brain moving with all the diversity of players. I find that stretching too far outside of my rating range is discouraging, but stretching a wee bit is exhilerating & encouraging. So, if you're wondering whether or not you out to try a tournament, go ahead! Dive in & splash about. You'll be swimming before you know it.

Cheers!

I like playing better players and don't mind getting crushed -- as my win-loss ratio will attest. I learn a lot from stronger players, and get a real kick out of beating them every once in a while.

I agree that playing others who are far above one's rating can be an exercise in frustration.  I recently joined a tournament "Play your rating..." which only allows you to participate within a 200 point rating range.  For example, search on: "play your rating" to find the series of such tournaments.  That seems (so far) to be a very satisfying way to go.
