Chess is useless!!

Did you ever asked yourself why you play chess?

It is useless and futile just like any other game in this world.

What is the gain, what is the loss, what does it bring to you more than what family and friends do?

Chess is a waste of time, unless you have as lot of time on your hands as I do.

Chess is futile and belligerant, no one needs this kind of pressure especially as you get to be older.

My advice is live your life and if you do not have anything else to do as me play chess.

It's my favourite waste of time and anyway, it brings out all the emotions over the board and it's important to use your brain especially as you get older.

As I have written in my profile, to me chess is:

- a universe of endless opportunities

- a way to meditate

- a metaphor for life

- a reflection of myself, with all my pros and cons, my dreams and desires, fears and disappointments

- an art form

- a mental martial art

That's far from useless isn't it? I recommend the book "Samurai chess" (Gelb/Keene) for you. I also think Kasparov has written a book recently about what chess has to do with ordinary life. But I don't know anything about it unfortunately...

I am no good at sport competitions, so, maths competitions and chess tournaments is my definition of competitiveness. I also play table tennis, which I won the premiership this year for (I'm no good at footy and soccer, basketball etc.).

Chess also helps me think, I believe it does make you smarter. (Can anyone else back me up here?)

Paul, Well, Iam disabled at the moment and have some time on my hands, but NO money to do these things I've always wanted to do all my life. Guess what? I play chess. That's what I do. Simple.   Greg(take it or leave it)
