Open seeks not worthy

Submitted by paul211 on Sun, 03/01/2009 at 3:17pm.

Why is it that when I go to open seeks to challenge players that I find only 6 to 8 people available?

Surely with 50,000+ players playing chess here on this site there has to be more than 8 players that want to be challenged.

Is it my settings somewhere or is it a restricted, preset chess.com programming issue? Do you experience the same thing?

And how do you get so many games to play with new people?

I am by the way a new greeter and 80 to 90% quit on the 1st move, yes that early, what is missing for them to continue to play chess?

I personally think that they do not know how to navigate, even make a single move.

Programmers  shortcomings are 2 fold:

1. No instructions on how to go about doing things or to perform the next sequential operation. They are not paid for it!!

2. Intuitive or user friendly interface not present.

No blame this is life.

What can be done to improve all aspects of the sites navigation and welcoming new comers?

Team Matches are another common source of games - just join a few active groups. Also, since teams get sorted into rating order, you will automatically get paired against someone with vaguely suitable rating.

considering that 50,000 more or less are here to play chess, and membership is getting close to 500,000 - approximately 9 out of 10 are here NOT to play chess.  that they got automatically paired with a greeter upon arrival is not of concern to them at all - and they don't return to move.

If you have constructive and useful comments to improve the site, why don't you post those to 'contact'  - to site management in an email to the programmers - rather than just post a forum to complain about a site you are not paying a penny to use?

and yes, about 90% of those greeter games end within 3 moves as the newbie times out.   I found the user interface to be quite intuitively useable and friendly.    I think the programmers are doing a fantastic job here, resulting in the truly phenomenal growth of registered users for this site.

Paul, I usually see more than that, of course many people put a limit on how a rating they will play against which lessens the number of seeks higher players see open.  I get a lot of my games through tournaments.  Usually about 60%.  Settings wise you may have set some limits but unless you write what they are here I can't comment. I seem to recall offering you a game when you remarked high ranked players wouldn't play you but you were too busy :-)
