For those in the UK or who can watch programmes from BBC Iplayer, there is a documentary on the life of Bobby Fischer Genius and Madman. It's an hour and a half long and absolutely superb.

do you Pity Mohammed Ali? Would he trade the greatness for the Parkinsons? Many people would trade to their life to have been Ali for a day and achieve his charisma and phsical skills! We each have a calling! Bobby lived and died his fulfilling some greater purpose we may never understand! God rest his Soul!

Despite his decline in later years the question for me is. How many people would be playing chess in America and the rest of the Western World had Bobby Fischer not come along and stirred things up on such a huge scake in the early 70's? I believe chess would still be looked on as a Russian safekeep to a great extent.

@haematologist (et al.): You say that in in the final analysis, Fischer had nothing left to show for his life but his fading chess power. However, all things considered, I think that Fischer made a far more substantial and palpable contribution to the world than any of us is ever likely to make. How many of us are likely to touch millions of people's lives the way he did? How many of us are likely to be as passionately engaged with anything in life as Fischer was? How many of us are likely to experience the ecstasy of real genius coursing through our veins, even for one second? And in the end, how many of us will have enough to show for our lives that documentaries and biographies will be made of them? Okay, so Fischer said some unpopular things at the end, and he didn't seem to be particularly content. But from what I can see, he had far more to show for his life than any of us is ever likely to have.

In the Philippines, we need to emulate the example of the life, focus and goals of Bobby Fischer in chess. It is only then we can produce chess champion of world caliber. As of now, it is only Wesley So, who is doing the road work. There are a number who like to improve their games. Mabuhay silang tanan.

"I agree, very insightful of a chess genius. However, there is a lesson.
One can be obsessional and one-dimensional with the game ( and it is only a game)It was so sad to see Bobby Fischer become paranoid ansd clearly mad in his older age, with nothing left to show for his life except for his fading chess power.
Other people may disagree with me, but I believe that he paid too great a price for his genius"
I agree with you haematologist though Fischer was great in chess, his life was miserable. Don't get me wrong, i like the way he played chess but his principle in life was different. He came to the highest point of his life and lost interest like Michael Jordan, but he did come back strong. He was looking for something but didn't find it.

Just finished watching the documentary. I've seen other Bobby Fischer documentarie's before, but this one, was one of the best I've seen. It gets sad towards the end, even though you know it's coming. R.I.P. Mr.Fischer.

I saw a movie called Bobby Fischer Against the World...I think it's the same thing. 9/10 from my part. Wonderful documentary indeed! I have pity for what Bobby became in his later life...
Proxy server for the win! I'm in the US, but found a proxy server in the UK, and I'm watching it now :D
