Chess problem!

I don't think anybody knows this, but i am in fast-track set for Maths. This means that i get to do my maths GCSE a year early (if you live out of the UK, GCSE is a very important examination that REALLY affects your future). In one lesson, we had to solve a fun puzzle related to chess! I found it great fun, and i hope you do as well

As you can see, there is a picture of a chessboard. The question is simple, but has a very difficult answer. How many squares are there in the chessboard?
If you think you know the answer, please post in the comments section and i will tell you the answer by private messege. If you get the answer correct (no offence but i doubt it!), i will give you a chess.com trophy!
