Chess History Report

Hey everybody out there! I have a report I need to write about chess and give to a very special person in my life...MYSELF! I don't have a lot of books and going on the Internet these days isn't the most resourceful. So I was wondering if everyone could list one interesting fact that they know about chess or how it began. Then, in a week or so, I'm going to take all the facts I receive and write a "report" and post it on chess.com in my blog.
