Latest Sicilian Pin Theory

Submitted by sam_musil on Sun, 04/19/2009 at 11:34pm.

Recently, I have sponsored two thematic tournaments: Sicilian Pin and Sicilian Pin Koch.  I currently have 12 wins and 2 defeats in the Sicilian Pin Tourney and 11 wins, no defeats, and one draw in the Sicilian Pin Koch Tourney.   I have not analyzed many of these games because everyone is playing the same opening and I do not want to give these strong players too much help.  However, in this game, one of the four best players in my Sicilian Pin Koch Tourney, Bjarnsteinn Thorsson, introduces a technical novelty at move 13 that I could not find in any of my databases.  For the first 12 moves, Bjarn played exactly the same variation of the Pin that Marjan Lacic, 2685, plays against me.  Then I boldly launched into new territory with a PN (Personal Novelty) of 13. f4

that was first played in a master game in 1997 by Dan Alvarez.  I believe that this game demonstrates that this novelty is still the strongest reply.  White wins against 12. .. Ba5 with the dangerous looking white move 13. f4 that leads to hand-to-hand combat!  Enjoy!

If I had a chance I would play this line against youSmile (of course, I would be BlackWink).

Gala,

I said that I thought 16. .. d5! was much stronger than the weak 16. .. Bd4?, but  I choose not to answer your question at this time.  I will say this that after white's best reply, the resulting position is very tense and exciting, but I believe that white is still slightly better.  The variation needs to be tested at the master level, of course.  ( I am sure that it will be in either my Sicilian French Normal Tourney or my Sicilian Pin #2 which will start in September!) I cannot discuss it in more detail because several of my friends that still play the Pin read my blog!

Sincerely,  Sam

16...Bd4??  What would be your move after 16...d5 or 16...d6? I think, Black is not worse.
