I think a lot of people would like to know the answer to that question. I know I would find the answer to that very interesting. Like why is Magnus Carlssen playing against the world's best at only nineteen years of age? Why wasn't Einstein a good chess player? I'm not bragging, but I am a borderline genious (IQ=140). Yet I'm only an average chessplayer and not too smart about a lot of other things; like money and life!

A person rated 2000 is placed in the 4th percentile from the top of all players, so is better than approx 95% of all competitive players. In terms of making money from chess, a 2000 rating yields nothing.

Imagine having only a 2000 rating at say tennis & entering a Grand Slam event against the world's best. Even though you can beat 95% of all competitive players, you would be no match at all against the world's best :-(

What I would like to know is why some people who do well academically fail at chess so terribly in spite of entering competitions!
