Two miniatures

Hello again,

I finally found the time to reduce the number of my games, so that I can annotate more (which will hopefully help me improve). So here are two miniatures from my recent games. In the first one my opponent really underestimated the initiative he was handing me, in the other one he missed an early tactic costing him a piece and then gave me the initiative on top again.

Hope you enjoy,

sirprim

Glad to hear that you all liked it.

@slurpz: I'll try to explain: After white played 10.Ne5 in the first game I really felt like I had the advantage, but the question is, what exactly is my advantage as I have no material advantage and I even have a disadvantage in my pawn structure. Instead I got:

    • The bishop pair
    • Lots of open files and diagonals
    • better development
    • a pawn on e4 not allowing a knight on f3 which in turn weakens h2 (which is a common theme in the Advance French for example).

To sum this up: I have the initiative and I should start attacking on the kingside.

So I thought: How can I use whites placement of the knight to increase my development advantage and start attacking. And in these circumstances Qd5 made the most sense to me as it forces the knight to go to g4 (it took away c4 and c6). After 10. ... Qd5 11.Ng4 Qg5 12.Ne3 my position has greatly improved as the queen now x-rays the king, while whites position has not really improved, because he had to move his only developed piece yet twice again. Coming from there f5 was a pretty logical move to me to. It aims to remove the knight from e3 to enable the Bh3! move and it also "develops" the rook on f8, which supports the attack. That pawn is dangerous to white, should it ever reach f3 as whites g-pawn is pinned, but after g3 there is always the problem of Qh5 to h3 to g2#.

After that everything fell into place and with whites slow development trading my bishop for the kings pawn shield felt pretty natural.

In that second game I was also thinking about Qg4+, but finally felt that the check would not bear much fruit as the king is slightly better on h8 than g8.

@Sirprim, I don't understand moves 10 through 14 in the first game. I know what they did, but how did you know to play them instead of any other candidates? I like 13.d4 in the second game and I also like 15.Qh5, since I would have played 15.Qg4+ which wouldn't be so good!

You have a good feeling for how to imbalance a position.
