there are many stories, or rather fables about the origin of chess. The truth is that chess was orginated in southern asia, in a island called Ceylon. i will tell you the story of its origin. Long ago, there lived a king, who was very unhappy because at that time he was fighting a war with a neighboring tribe. unfortunately the king had to send his son to war. since it was a long and fierce battle, the king wanted to keep his mind off of the ongoing madness. the King, along with his advisors, announced his kingdom that the one who is able to make the king happy will recieve anything he or she wishes. For the next few days people from all over the land came up with many different ideas to make the king happy, but nothing worked. just when all hopes of making the king happy were crushed, a young boy came to the castle. he brought with him a chess board. after playing some games with the boy the king seemed to like the game. the king was happy and he played all day. then all of a sudden, the king realized that the position of the chess peices at that moment represented the ongoing war. he pondered for a long time to see if he could somehow save his sons life and protect his kingdom. for days he looked at every possible move, but to no avail. the only way to protect his kingdom was to sacrifice his son. the king made the choice to save his kingdom by sacrificing his son. after the war, the king visited the young boy who invented chess and asked him about his wish. do you know what the boy said? he told the king that all he wanted was some grain. the boy said, "first put one grain of the first square and then double the amount of grain that was on the previous sqaure." the king, though the child was stupid and agreed to his term. the king put a "certain" amount grain on each square and when he reached the last square he was quite surprised at the total amount of grain! if you do tha math the final amount of grain was
2^(64-1) = 2^63 = 2^64-1= 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 grains.
if you like math like i do you will see that this is also an example of the geometric sequence.
i hope the history of chess proved usefull. thank you.
