White is playing with move order a bit. I don't know much about the French Exchange, but the normal move order would be 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e:d e:d 4.Nf3.

Some other lines against the French:

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 c5 5.a3 B:c3 b:c3    French Winawer

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2    French Tarrasch

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 d:e4 4.N:e4     French Rubinstein

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5    French Advance

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.f4

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5

I haven't had the opportunity to play against the French much. Two of my favorite wins though have been against the French. I'll add them to this post when I start up my laptop.

This first one was one of my first games against the French, and as can be seen I didn't know the theory really beyond 3.Nc3. I like my exchange sacrifice keeping the King in the middle of the board though. This is a G/30 over the board game.

The second is from last year and the only time I have run into the French Rubinstein. I was on my own after 4.N:e4 .Another G/30 over the board game.

Interesting!  I was looking for a good example of a possible variation in the openings after 1. e4 e6 2. nf3 is played.  This was perfect.  Thanks.
