Smothered Mate?

Submitted by themonsteriam on Sun, 10/04/2009 at 10:17pm.

Damn. I must have encountered this mate about a billion times on Tactics Trainer and I didn't get to finish it out! Oh well, it was a good game (even though I made mistakes and a blunder, I think). What is this mate officially called? Everyone seems to call it a smothered mate, but I wonder if it has an official name. Anyone?

That is its official name.  "Smothered" is what we call any mate delivered by a knight in which the king has no escape square.
