what ruins this site is...

Submitted by thespicekitten on Thu, 06/19/2008 at 4:18am.

that some people on here say really inappropriate things. im on this site to play a few games of chess and chat to the people i play against, the majority of which are really friendly. i had a male on here recently saying very inappropriate things to me during a game... i disabled chat. have logged onto my account today and found the same guy has posted this comment on my picture album...

"  played with me plzzzzzzzzzzzzz sexy and i love u i won fack u "

what exactly does this have to do with chess??? its masogenist (spelling?) and unwanted, i guess im hoping this person will read this, or others who in the past have said such things to me (believe me, ive encountered a fair few) and maybe thing ok, i shouldnt have said that, ill calm down. fair enough if youve gotten to know me as a friend i can take a joke, but this is just rediculous.

how many other female players have had this problem?? and actually, im curious, do any males have this problem from female members on here? im pretty interested to know just how regular this kind of problem is on this website.

Misogynist is the spelling you're searching for I believe. I don't have much else to add to the conversation but I hope things have gotten more mature and appropriate lately.

I suggest you tell us who this person is, and I will not play any games with him. This kind of behaviour is inappropriate. If we all stick together and refuse to communicate with this person or any others who do this kind of thing, in any way, maybe it will cease.

So it is written, so let it be done.

Peace to you my sister.

you should report the abuse, i'm sure they'll sort it out if you do, plenty of other places for that type of stuff

im not going to let this affect me using the site, but even tho u maybe think it sounds harsh, it does ruin the site for me. cos this isnt the 1st time its happened. it happens quite alot if im honest. but sure, ive met more good people than bad, which does outweigh it for me!

like i said, im curious to know if this happens to other people, male or female?

Awww, hey Sheryl, I feel your frustration. It is definitely an annoyance to be playing a leisurely game and have that kind of unwanted intrusion.

I'm sure you wrote this blog out of just such irritation, but I want to say that I think your use of words is a tad condemning "what ruins this site" - wouldn't you agree that all of the cool people you've met outweigh this one, sleezy incident?

Chess.com is set up so that these things shouldn't really be an issue. Look on the bright side! - you never have to play this person again. This is why there are both the disable chat and the block utilities. But you're absolutely right in that the presence of these types doesn't contribute to the site as a whole.

The "Report Abuse" button is always good in these instances - and while I don't imagine that this transgression would result in a banning, per say, I'm certain that admin would likely give this user a stern warning regarding this behavior in the future. The staff has implemented a utility that allows them to tag notes onto certain users - and I'm sure they'd flag this character in case they recieve a similar complaints.

I'm sorry that you were annoyed by this person, but please remind yourself of all the other, fun and interesting people you've met - this rude guy is the exception, rather than the rule on chess.com, and I'd hate to imagine that you'll allow him to "ruin" your experience for you!

i guess i have the option of reporting it, but

1. i wouldnt know how to go about it, and

 2. i dont wanna be responsible for kicking anyone off the site

so i guess there isnt alot the management can do. it just puzzles me as theres plenty of websites for flirting with other people, why bring it here??
