Rounds 7 & 8 - FIDE Amateur World Championship

I almost thought about naming this blog "A change of character & total meltdown".  I think it will be evident why if/when you view the games.

I felt comfortable going into round 7 with a 4-2 score.  I did go out of character in my play, and I am not sure why.  I have not had a chance for the bot's to analyze my games ...

Game 8 ... Understand that I had worked all week with the exception of Monday.  I also had 4 hours of sleep the previous night.  I found it difficult to look one move ahead.  Nothing to say about this game except TOTAL MELTDOWN!
All in all, I was satisfied with my play.  I am still exhausted and withdrew from the tournament last night.  The last round is tonight, Thursday, and its a relief to be home and enjoying my family.
Lessons learned:
1.  I don't have Opening Explorer at OTB tournaments.  Memorize the lines and ideas.
2.  Try not to play a 7 day tournament and work during the day.
3.  Don't panic when you are low on time!
An interesting note, as I was shocked at how exhausted I was at the end of the day.
Friday (I worked) - Loss
Saturday (Didn't work) - 2 wins
Sunday (Didn't work) - 1 win, 1 loss
Monday (Took off of work) - Win
Tuesday (I worked) - Loss
Wednesday (I worked & 4 hours sleep) - Horrific loss.
I will stick to weekend tournaments ;-)
I hope that you enjoyed the games!

polleke, thanks for posting the game.  I think that your 22nd move was just fine. I could be wrong but I prefer white in this game.  The plan would be to sink a rook into f6, supported by the other Rook at f3, then consider a sac with the Bishop.  I could be wrong, but thats the first thing that comes to mind.

hi - nice blog. my plan on move 8 (i'm white in game 8) on was to not allow e5 as a pivot point (outpost) for black's pieces. and ok, if you get in e4, it will be at a substantial cost. 16...Bf6 i thought most interesting, then BxB NxB Nxe5 followed by g4-g5 is the idea. note that the white knight is trapped on c7. this endgame is somehow better for me, but this is the best chance.

Here you go. I went wrong in the middle game at move 22 I think. Blocked the kingside and shut in the white bishop, but after that my rook was in the way of my pawns and I could not see a way forward. It would be interesting to see what you think would be the best way forward from that moment on.

Until move 12 Qa5 it's theory, after that I should have gone Qf4 according to my literature, but I wanted to keep my central pawns. Here is the game!

Game 8, I will never forget!  I have no shame in it though.  It taught me a valuable lesson!

Thanks for sharing your games and thoughts; fine lessons. It was tough to watch 8 - glad it was chess and not boxing! Great play when you had your game on. Damn life interfering with games.

Nice coverage! I have to play tonight after a week of too much work, opponent rated nearly 200 points higher, see how that goes Undecided...
