6 Puzzles: Caro-Kann, Fantasy Variation

Submitted by WTHarvey on Sun, 09/21/2008 at 5:33am.

Otherwise known as the Tartakower Variation, the opening begins with the simple 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.f3  The idea is to open the f-file to bring pressure on Black's kingside quickly.  The opening is often characteristic of sacrifices and other fireworks.  Here are some puzzles.  White to move and win.

Yes, no. 2 is a mate as noted I above.

Nice Puzzles. My best friend plays the fantasy variation and has had some success with it in Class "C" USCF tournaments. I'll send him this link.

Thanks!

In the second puzzle, 4. Nf8++ is better (mate on move 5).

Nice puzzles. Especially the first one. If black plays 1... Bf6 then 2. Qe7+! Bxe7 3. Ne6# leads to a nice smothered mate.
