lovely game, hard to believe that its 12 years old.  one would think it would have gotten a little more air time.

For sure, the entire game is home analysis.  Everything up through move 16 had been played recently.  Evidently, White's 17th move is the TN, the sacrifice of the second rook came shortly after that, and from there it was just a question of working out the winning attack.  Heck, I wouldn't be shocked to learn a computer worked out the main lines.

Well, that's modern GM chess for you.  Find a great winning idea at home, and you get to use it once.  Now your competition knows about it.

Truly an awesome game! Can't believe such games are being played in modern master level play.

So it is safe to say that balck should be playing 16 ...h6 rather than 16 ... Kh8?

Yeah, you can add alternate lines by going back to the position the move previously, and then making a different move for the other side. Hope that helps.

Very cool, indeed.  And one more thing:  Until I read this blog, I did not realize that in the playing boards here we could add alternative lines.

The Timman game played a month before this game (which provided the basis of Black's opening preparations, no doubt) would be a good example of a sharp tactical game in the Nimzo-Indian won by Black:

Note that the first sixteen moves are identical to the above game, and that Black's plan has been described in the annotations for the above game.

That's a great Nimzo game.  Do you have one equally as sharp where black wins?

Actually, Gyula Sax participated in the Candidates Tournament, after qualifying from the Subotica Interzonal, in 1987, being eliminated by Nigel Short. His highest rating was 2610 ,  which would have placed him as one of the 'super' GMs of the eighties and nineties.

wow...wow...beautiful game...it seems that the "lower" echelon of the GM world still can play dangerous creative combatative chess. very few of the "upper" echelon of the "super" GM class dosent seem to take risks like this any more
